The Schmitter, invented at McNally’s Tavern in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, is roast beef, grilled onions, cotto salami, thick slices of tomato, melted white American cheese and “Schmitter sauce” (a house-made Thousand Island dressing) on a Kaiser roll. It’s a sloppy mess and absolutely delicious.
