In a culture where people don’t interact with strangers at the social table, what would you suggest for interaction between them?

Let people do their thing? If they don’t want to interact, why try to force it?

I think one long table is helpful. Board games, paper, wood puzzles are great, any sort of activities anyone else can become interested in, without feeling like they’re interrupting. Scheduling events is really important too, like game night, or networking meetups.

Walk up to some regular customers, give them a plate of snacks and say its for the table. Chat real quick about how they like things. Start the conversation, walk away. hard to do in a rush but when things wind down it is good.

I think it would be helpful to have shared things in spaces people can interact over. Like the cafe version of the water cooler at some boring office job.

Have a tech free zone with placards saying something like, “this area is for talking, flirting, joking, and eye contact. Please no laptops, cellphones or headphones etc”

There should be some seating options for secluded tables and some for big community tables with things to encourage interaction. Some of those things can be easy to set up games ready to go, boards with post its and pens and a drawing prompt, riddle of the day, conversation starter cards, maybe like something covered up that says “mystery box” and underneath is some goofy trinket. Things that will encourage people to interact in ways that don’t feel like “we have to interact” but more “I’m intrigued, the other person is intrigued, we now have something we relate with”.
