What a gem of a find. Came across this new-ish restaurant in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture while looking for dining options in Kyoto that I could book in less than a month. It was a pretty last minute trip (by Japanese restaurant booking standards) and honestly had no hope of scoring any reservation.
The restaurant is located in L’Hotel du Lac, away from most sights along the lake but they did have a pickup service from Nagahama station, which we used. Ngl it reminded me a bit of The Menu lol.
Sower serves Kohoku cuisine and everything—ingredients, sake, even the plates—is sourced from producers and artisans in the area. Food was great, vibes were immaculate, service was friendly.
It was interesting to hear how each course came about e.g. the deliberate choice of putting black bass on the menu to reduce its effect on the biodiversity of Lake Biwa (the species is not native to the lake).
Really appreciate what the chef & team is trying to do at Sower and excited to see what’s in store! Definitely worth the trip out and will be back for sure. Although, I’d probably stay a night the next time. Gorgeous place.
