Do you have a list of everything you bought? I’m looking to go the Mediterranean diet route with my weight loss/healthy journey, and would love to have a sure list of foods to get.

You did decently. I’m guessing you have a lactose intolerance?

Milk & other dairy should be whole milk. Yes, I know it goes against all the “fat is evil” propaganda, but it’s fine.

Your chicken sausage… Check the ingredients. Usually sausages have nitrates which you ideally want to avoid. (Lidl has a really clean chicken sausage.)

The pitas are not compliant. Enjoy them, but honestly, besides having not-great ingredients, they’re also kinda thin and fall apart easily. They’re tasty, though. You might like them as the basis for make-your-own pizzas or pita chips. Trader Joe’s has a “close enough” whole wheat pita.

For your bread… Better to go with Dave’s red label (powerseed). Its only sugar comes from fruit juice. Green label isn’t bad. Keep in mind that one slice is a serving. (It makes a yummy hearty sandwich.)

I see you have vegetable broth. And yay! Lower sodium! If you have the space and capability to process your own stock… Store all your root veggie scraps, asparagus stems, celery ends/ leaves, and parsley arms in a gallon-sized freezer bag in the freezer. When it’s full, thaw it, dump it in a 5 quart Dutch oven, and cover the scraps with water. Let simmer 40 minutes. Strain and put into jars. 1″ headspace, 25 minutes (pints) at 10 psi adjusted for altitude.

Eta: That feta isn’t real feta. Authentic feta is at least 70% sheep’s milk. That is made with cow’s milk. Lidl and Trader Joe’s have the best prices on feta. My daughter likes the milder flavor of the crumbles. TJ’s has an Israeli feta that is authentic but smoother than Greek feta.

When you’re shopping, pay attention to ingredient labels and nutrition panels. That’ll give you the truth about the foods. The front is for advertising only.

This is a great shop full of delicious and healthful foods that fit in just nicely with a Mediterranean way of eating. But you can enjoy regular dairy (in moderation) instead of low fat, which is how they traditionally enjoy dairy in the Mediterranean region.

    I don’t see any EVOO!?!
Get the good stuff if you can afford it.

  5. How long does this haul of yours typically lasts?
