Northeast USA zone 6a, 7b. I noticed some of my beet tops had wilted and started to dye back, so I pulled a few to see if they were ready, and see what’s going on. Looks like mycelium. They are in raised beds, huglekulture style, with compost. There is approximately 12” of soil before the logs underneath. These were plucked from the outside corner of a 2 foot row of beets. The next row is about 10” away. This is also the sunny side of the bed. No other beets appear to be affected. I threw it in the compost pile. I want to know if it isn’t mycelium, and if the rest of my beets wil be ok.
Thanks.

It does look like mycelium. Not sure if maybe the beet was dead and the fungus is eating it or if the mycelium is just flourishing in surrounding medium and not actually in the beet. I’m not aware of any problematic fungus that would attack live beets in this way, but theres a first for everything. I would not worry but you could check some nearby living beets.

Mycelium will sometimes trade nutrients with plant roots, and these are just roots. I assume they were having some kind of symbiotic relationship
