Check out the “exact instructions challenge” that will definitely make you laugh!

This hilarious video has emerged of two kids trying to write exact instructions for their dad to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, with little success.

This challenge was shot by Josh Darnit, who got the idea from a friend whose science teacher had done a similar experiment back in high school. It shows Johnna and Evan, his kids, taking turns trying to help their father create a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

However, Josh follows the instructions to the letter, leading to funny fails.

  1. The truth is that these fails would only occur with those who a) deliberately misunderstand like their dad or b) with those on the Autistic Spectrum. They need exact instruction because they cannot read social clues and understand nothing that is so called common knowledge of how to, the things that 'go without saying'. Every other average person could make the sandwich with the shortest description correctly. If I say take a jar of peanut butter and the jelly tube two pieces of toast bread or any slices, a butter knife and spread them on the bread and then stick them together. Any child or adult would understand these instructions without any problem whatsoever and do the right way, because it is common knowledge how we do these things. Also, because ordinary people do not have to do everything 'just so'. Autistic people tend to want to make things perfectly, so for them it is extremely important to do it well, those with OCD are taken up with perfection even more so.

  2. I remember my 3rd grade teacher doing this with the class 😂😂😂😂😂

  3. This is simply superb. The fact that specific instructions needs to be "specific" is clearly outlined, kudos to the dad & his kids 😄

  4. When little man melts down 😂 Feel that way teaching people at work all the time little buddy!

  5. I had my middle school students do this activity. It was so much fun to watch them trying to write and follow instructions. 😂

  6. @nnkar1996 as a QA Engineer, I would send this back to Dev with the observation that it would be a better customer experience if the knife was put into the peanut butter, handle side out. This was so fun!

  7. We did this task on day one of my computer science degree I swear to God

  8. I've been a teacher/instructor my entire life, and this totally expresses the essence of what it's like to teach and assess people. And really, it goes deeper, as it depicts the basic problems of communication. We assume SO MUCH, and when we have to communicate with someone whose thought processes don't match our assumptions, chaos ensues.

  9. I had to do something like this in middle school science. It taught us the importance of being super specific with directions, as well as following steps exactly as they are written

  10. We did this in English class in school to teach us the importance of details in writing. It was hilarious. I don't think a single PB&J sandwich was make probably.
