Hi!
3 weeks into the Mediterranean diet due to doctors orders.
So far I LOVE it and truly see this as a lifestyle change. There’s just so much good food to be made that feels extra good to know it’s all nourishing my body and well balanced. I’ve already lost 10 pounds from just diet alone and have started incorporated daily walks and yoga to help shed more.

That said, the only thing I’m missing is my SUGARY COFFEE’s. 😭 it’s truly the one Vice that is the hardest to overcome. I’ve ditched the drive through drinks and the sugary creamers, now just reg morning coffee with a splash of zero sugar added oatmilk. And I’m miserable!

I’ve tried “spicing” it up with cinnamon, and Dutch coco and it still is not hitting the spot.

I ended up buying this sugar free syrup, used only one tbsp in my coffee yesterday and it instantly hit the spot. It was the sweetness I’ve been craving!

That said, I’m supposed to be staying away from ultra processed foods and I’m sure this syrup, even with zero sugar and calories, falls under ultra processed.

So I wanted to get everyone’s advice on sugar free syrups and how a tbsp a day falls within that. If it’s still a no-no, I would love some recommendations on ways to make my morning coffee more enjoyable.

Have you tried honey? It is sooo good in coffee (completely different flavor) and a little goes a long way.

I used to put two teaspoons of sugar into eat tea or coffee and I thought I would “hate” tea or coffee without it.

For a while I didn’t like it but after a while I could actually enjoy the taste of the coffee and appreciate different beans/blends.

I could never imagine putting any sugar let alone two tea spoons back in my coffee again.

What are you using to make your coffee currently? Is it instant coffee or something else?

Try getting an aeropress and getting some freshly roasted beans and a grinder and make your coffee that way and try to appreciate the actual taste and quality of coffee over something that is basically sugar that happens to have caffeine in it.

Also sugar addiction takes a while to get past. Hang in there.

  3. Stevia and vanilla almond milk is good, also lots of delicious stevia flavored drops

It’s not consistent with the ‘essence’ of the Mediterranean diet, but if your intention is improving your health, I say go for it.

One of the ingredients is acesulfame potassium. Take from this what you will – from WebMD:

    > Acesulfame potassium has been deemed “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA. Still, some researchers are finding it could have negative health effects.

    > One study done on mice found that Ace-K caused weight gain and shifts in the gut microbiome, which could potentially lead to obesity and chronic inflammation. But we need more studies to see if these effects happen in humans as well.

I would just use sugar or honey and balance it out somewhere else. Walk more or skip that dessert.
