Another fantastic West African tasting menu in London. Akoko doesn’t have a star but I found this mean as excellent as Ikoyi to be honest. And Akoko definitely had a bit more creativity/courage in some of its dishes, whereas I felt Ikoyi tried to go over the top with ingredient quality but was playing it a tiny bit safe to keep its stars.
I got the Akoko pairing, which included some African wines, a cocktail made with ogogoro (palm wine liquor), and a Nigerian Guinness. I also added the £35 tatale supplement.
Standouts include the tatale supplement, which really reminded me of an African take on Russian blini with caviar, the ox tongue suya (which was grilled on an open flame grill), and the jollof, which included puffed rice to mimic the burnt crispy rice you get when cooking something like jollof.
West African food is not something I have much experience with, which is why I sought it out on my trip to London. Both Ikoyi and Akoko were excellent, but ofc Akoko is easier on the wallet.
The service was top class as well and I had a great time at the chef’s table where I was able to watch all the food being made in the open kitchen and even got some opportunities to chat with chef Ayo. I would not be surprised if Akoko gets a star sooner than later.

We did the abbreviated lunch menu with the pairing. Utterly fantastic! Loved every course, the music, and the service. I regularly listen to their Spotify playlist 😂
